old-fashioned A minced oath in which "George" is a substitute for "God."
1. An exclamation of surprise, wonder, or astonishment. By George, I think we've finally blown the case wide open! A: "If you carry the five, then you can solve for X." B: "You're right, by George! How did I not see that?" By George, you've done it again! Congratulations on another election victory.
2. Used to emphasize or intensify one's statement. A: "Tom, what happened to the money I gave you? I thought you were going to take it to the bank." B: "I did, by George—I handed it to the teller myself!" It was a pain in the rear end getting that old lawnmower working again, but by George I did it! We don't have much to work with, but by George we're going to figure out a way to save our business!

slang A draft of air. The term comes from rhyming slang in which "George" is short for "George Raft," which rhymes with "draft." (George Raft was a US actor in the 1930s.) Primarily heard in UK. Can we switch seats? There's a George over here, and I'm freezing! A: "In an old house like this, you'd be lucky to find a room that didn't have a George in it!" B: "Ah, so that's why the house is freezing." Can we put something up against the bottom of the door? There's seems to be a George getting through.
