dipper

autem dipper

obsolete One belonging to the Anabaptist faith, in which believers are baptized after infancy. "Autem" is an obsolete slang word for church, so an "autem dipper" is one whose faith is based on baptism (that is, a "dip" in water). As one has no concept of faith as an infant, the autem dippers believe that baptism should take place when one is old enough to affirm belief in the church. I can't believe they've turned away from the Catholic church and are raising their children as autem dippers. I'm not an autem dipper, I was baptized at birth.

dip

slang
1. A stupid or foolish person. Todd, you dip—did you leave the refrigerator open again? I felt like a total dip after getting the answer wrong. Geez, he keeps pulling on a door that's clearly marked "push"—what a dip.
2. A pickpocket. The dips will usually bump into you or do something else to distract you while they relieve you of your valuables. The dips move stealthily among the congregation, lifting the purses and coins from those focused on the sermon. I know I had more money than this in my pocket. The dips must have gotten to me!
3. An act or instance of pickpocketing. After the dip, the thief hands off the stolen property to an accomplice who flees the scene before anyone notices him. Pull off the dip, then get out of there so no one catches you with their wallet! I know I had more money than this in my pocket. I think there's been a dip!

double-dipper

1. A recipient of a government pension who continues to work or receives Social Security. Don't be a double-dipper—collect your pension and let someone else have this job. Once you start getting pension payments on top of your paycheck, you could be accused of being a double-dipper. Hey, I'm no double-dipper—I'm fully retired now!
2. Someone who takes a bite of a food item and then inserts it into a dip, thereby contaminating the dip. Hey, don't be a double-dipper—no one wants your germs! Here's the salsa, kids, but we can't have any double-dippers! I'm not a double-dipper, that's gross! I scooped up some guac, then polished off my chip.

fanny-dipper

slang A swimmer (in contrast to other surfers). Hey, watch out for those fanny-dippers when you go back out there with your surfboard. A: "I have an extra board if you want to go out with me." B: "No thanks, I'm perfectly happy here with fellow fanny-dippers." OK, let's head out, surfers. We'll catch you up with you fanny-dippers later.

faster than a minnow can swim a dipper

Extremely quickly; almost immediately; suddenly or in a very short space of time. Once I'm finished with high school, I'll be outta this two-bit town faster than a minnow can swim a dipper! I was out fishing one day when, faster than a minnow can swim a dipper, a 20-pound trout jumped out of the water and right into my lap! It always happens this way—I sit down to work on something, and my phone rings faster than a minnow can swim a dipper.
