1. To wait until a disturbance or commotion has lessened or been resolved. A: "Have you asked your boss for a raise yet?" B: "Not yet. There's just been so much going on at work at the moment, so I'm waiting for the dust to settle first." There's a lot of police activity around here lately. We should wait for the dust to settle before we start dealing again.
2. To wait until a new or altered situation has normalized. The product has only been on the market for a couple weeks. Let's wait for the dust to settle before we start making assumptions about its performance.
