To waste or squander money; to spend money foolishly or carelessly. I don't know why you pour money down the drain on such useless things. I thought I'd save some cash buying a second-hand car, but I've poured so much money down the drain trying to get it working that I might as well have just bought a new one!

Fig. to waste money; to throw money away. What a waste! Buying that old car is just pouring money down the drain. Don't buy any more of that low-quality merchandise. That's just throwing money down the drain.
