live in the boondocks
live in the boondocks
To live in a very distant or remote location, often one that lacks modern amenities. "Boondocks" comes from the Tagalog word bundok, meaning "mountain"; it originated as US military slang. A: "My uncle invited us to come over for dinner tonight." B: "Ugh, but he lives way out in the boondocks—it'll take us hours to get there." After spending 15 years suffocating in the big city, I decided to sell my possessions and go live in the boondocks in a log cabin.
