inch (oneself) along (something)

To move across something in very small increments or very gradually. We all watched in awe as the man carefully inched himself along the tightrope. I couldn't take my eyes off the hornet as it inched itself along the windowsill next to me. The dog must have picked up on some strange scent because she's inching herself along the fence like she's hunting something.
