slang To engage in aimless recreation or frivolous time-wasting. Quit farting around and work on your book report already! If the government would quit farting around and put their minds to the problem, they'd have an effective solution ready in no time! Instead of working on my taxes, I just farted around for most of the afternoon. That was a waste.
