be doped to the gills
To be thoroughly intoxicated by drugs, especially those prescribed by a doctor, to the point of incoherence or senselessness. I was doped to the gills for about two weeks after my surgery. I'm off the painkillers now, but I still feel pretty out of it. Boy, you were doped to the gills after your procedure. You said something about "purple moon sprinkles" and then couldn't stop laughing. You can't drive while you're taking these medications—you're doped to the gills!
do dope
To use drugs recreationally. I really admire Jess for never submitting to the peer pressure of those around her to drink or do dope. Sure, I used to do dope, once upon a time—but then I went to rehab. I don't think you realize how dangerous it is to do dope like you're doing.
do drugs
To use drugs recreationally. I really admire Jess for never submitting to the peer pressure of those around her to drink or do drugs. Yeah, I used to do drugs, once upon a time—but then I went to rehab. How can we, as a community, effectively prevent our kids from doing drugs?
dope fiend
A drug addict. Yeah, I used to be a dope fiend, but that was a long time ago—before I went to rehab. He used to be a real upright guy with a bright future ahead of him. Now he's just a dope fiend who spends each day looking for his next hit. Addiction is a powerful thing. Today's dope fiends were yesterday's recreational drug users.
dope out
To intoxicate someone (with narcotic or psychotropic drugs), especially to the point of losing consciousness or becoming incomprehensible. A noun or pronoun can be used between "dope" and "out." Whatever the doctor gave me to ease the pain really doped me out. The kidnappers doped out the target and hauled her into the van. I don't remember anything from last night at all. It's like someone doped me out at the party.
dope out (something)
To solve or figure out; to calculate or infer from available information. We doped out a way of keeping the business open without having to fire anybody. I didn't read the required chapter before class, but I was able to dope out what was going on from the professor's lecture. Because things were so tense, it was easy to dope out that they'd had a big fight.
dope sheet
1. A racing publication that provides detailed information on racehorses and their jockeys to prospective gamblers. Also known as a "scratch sheet." I quit gambling five years ago, but I still like to look over the dope sheets at the race tracks just to feel a bit of that rush again. How am I supposed to place my bets without first seeing a dope sheet? A: "I've never been to a horse race before. What's a dope sheet?" B: "Something you'll need if you want to bet."
2. A document summarizing important details and background information regarding a specific person, activity, situation, or any other subject. The sergeant handed out the suspect's dope sheet at the meeting this morning, so each officer had a good idea who they were looking for. The journalist always created a dope sheet for herself about any story she was planning to cover. Because I had studied the dope sheet so thoroughly, I was able to immediately pick out the suspect in the coffee shop.
3. A set of running instructions provided by an animator to photographers and editors as to how a particular animation should be filmed. Also known as an "exposure sheet." The animator's dope sheet was so convoluted and complex that we really had no idea what way he wanted the animation to appear on screen. You've seen the dope sheet? OK, then what are you thinking for camera angles? I gave them a dope sheet, so I don't know why they filmed the animation like that—it's not what I asked for.
dope up
slang
1. To give or dispense drugs to someone or something. This phrase can be used in reference to both legal and illegal drugs. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "dope" and "up." The doctor must have doped me up with some good stuff because I'm not in any pain at all now. I don't remember last night's party at all—someone must have doped me up. The kidnappers doped up the target and hauled her into the van.
2. To purchase illegal drugs. I doped up today, so I've got plenty for the concert tonight, don't worry. If you're planning to dope up today, be careful. Undercover cops are just looking to an excuse to bust someone buying drugs. Can you believe that guy wanted me to dope up? Like I would ever buy drugs from some rando on the street!

You said something about "purple moon sprinkles" and then couldn't stop laughing. You can't drive while you're taking these medications—you're doped to the gills!
rope-a-dope
Coined by US boxer Muhammad Ali, who famously employed this strategy in the ring.
1. noun A boxing strategy in which one allows oneself to become trapped against the ropes while blocking an opponent's punches, thus causing them to become fatigued and vulnerable to attack. It looks like the underdog's rope-a-dope is working, with the heavyweight champion starting to get sluggish.
2. adjective Of or describing such a strategy or technique. Remember, don't get sucked in by her rope-a-dope tactics. Try to keep her engaged in the middle of the ring.
3. adjective Of or describing a strategy in which one allows oneself to enter a passive or defensive position in order to anticipate and capitalize on an opportunity to attack an opponent. The senator displayed a textbook rope-a-dope technique during the debate, having prepared defenses against her opponent's every attack, then delivering several sobering criticisms near the end that went largely uncontested. It was true rope-a-dope defense by the home team, shutting down their opponent's every offensive opportunity in order to maintain control of their lead.
the inside dope
slang Information that is not widely known or shared; privileged information. They've hired me as a consultant, but so far they aren't giving me the inside dope on what the project will actually be. It's all very cloaks and daggers. So, what's the inside dope on you and Jake? Are you two, like, an item now?
the straight dope
The absolute, unadulterated truth. You've got to give your clients the straight dope as soon as possible to salvage any of this. They're going to find out one way or another, so you might as well do it now. I just feel like these doctors are never giving me the straight dope about her condition.
you dope
You fool. Don't push that, you dope! That's the eject button!
