After spending weeks constructing my project, I was thrilled to carry the day at the science fair. It's the Olympics, so good luck predicting which highly-decorated skier will carry the day.
2. To gain acceptance, as of an idea or concept. I thought his ideas were ridiculous, but they really carried the day with his audience. It takes time for new scientific concepts to carry the day with the population at large. If they have real merit behind them, even the "craziest" notions carry the day eventually.
