get the W

get the W

1. In sports or another competition, to win. In a box score, a win is recorded as "W." We played sloppy, but all that matters is that we got the W. Which pitcher got the W last night? How are we supposed to get the W when all of our best players are injured?
2. By extension, to achieve success in some endeavor or pursuit. You better go in there and get the W—we really need to score this account. After our gig got canceled, I got the W by finding our band an even better one! Don't be discouraged—not everyone gets the W when they present an idea to the boss.
