To not be working as hard as one should; to be shirking one's responsibilities. If the boss finds out you've been asleep on the job, you're going to end up getting fired! Johnson was supposed to make sure the paperwork went through before the deadline, but it looks like he was asleep on the job. Our goalkeeper is such a nincompoop. We would have won that match if he hadn't been asleep on the job!
