backwater

A place that is extremely remote or isolated, such that it is removed from the reach and influence of the outside world and thus is often regarded as socially stagnant or backward. He grew up in a bit of a backwater, so his manners aren't exactly refined. I'm a city girl at heart, so I could never live in a backwater like that. At 18, I was desperate to get out of the backwater I'd grown up in and see the world.
