fall short of the record

To fail to reach or surpass a mark achieved by someone or something else. Even with all that rainfall we experienced earlier in the month, our totals fell short of the record. You're not going to be in the Guinness World Records if you fell short of the record you were trying to break! Like, duh! We get so much snow around here that, even with this massive storm, I bet we still far short of the record.
