smell trouble

To sense, detect, or suspect that someone or something is or will be a cause or source of distress, disturbance, danger, or difficulty. A: "Hey, Bill, I just heard about an amazing opportunity to get rich!" B: "Uh oh, I smell trouble." The detective thought he smelled trouble as he pulled up to the warehouse where the gang was suspected to be hiding.
