be murder on (someone or something)

To cause a lot of harm, distress, or ill effects to someone or something. Staring at this computer screen all day has really been murder on my eyes! I just think working in the evenings and having to get up with the kids in the morning is going to be murder on you. I've been rejected more times than I care to remember. Dating is really murder on a guy's ego.
