Something that is indicative of what will happen or become popular in the future. I think this trend is a harbinger of things to come, but there's no way to know for sure. Uh, maybe we should turn back—those dark clouds look like a harbinger of things to come. Please tell me that this dip in the stock market isn't a harbinger of things to come.

harbinger of doom

A sign, omen, or warning of a terrible fate or outcome in the future. The politician has increasingly become a harbinger of doom, warning that his political opponents are steering the country toward utter destruction. While I didn't vote for that gubernatorial candidate, I don't see his win as some harbinger of doom either. It's hard to not see the stock market crash as a harbinger of doom!

a sample of the events that are to occur in the future. The first cuts in our budget are a harbinger of things to come. Today's visit from the auditors is a portent of things to come.
