bowl (someone) a googly
To present someone with a question, situation, or piece of information that is surprising or unexpected. Taken from cricket, in which a "googly" is a ball thrown counter to that which the batsman expects. Primarily heard in UK. Dave really bowled me a googly when he asked if I'd like to go on a date with him. The manager bowled us a googly by announcing we'd have this Friday off. I thought I'd blown my chance when I was late to the second interview, but then the recruiter bowled me a googly and told me the job was mine!
goggle-eyed
1. With the eyes open very wide in surprise. I have some great pictures of the kids looking positively goggle-eyed at the zoo. Mary's announcement that she was pregnant left most of us goggle-eyed. We stared goggle-eyed at the firemen as they rushed past us into the burning building.
2. slang Drunk. Do you remember last night at the bar at all? You were really goggle-eyed! I'm past the point in my life where I want to spend every weekend at a bar getting goggle-eyed. I must have been goggle-eyed if I got up and did karaoke at the bar last night!
googly eyes
Small plastic discs that are typically used in craft projects as eyes. (The white background of the disc is fixed, but the black part can move, somewhat resembling the pupil of a human eye.) Often applied to any sort of puppet or cartoon that has eyes that move in a similarly "wild" manner. I have the kids putting googly eyes on pipe cleaners—that should entertain them for a while. Cookie Monster is known for his googly eyes. I'm sorry, but I can't stop laughing at the googly eyes you put on your sock puppet!

Of course they're beaming at each other googly-eyed—they've only been dating for, like, five minutes!
