1. Someone considered uncool and eccentric, typically due to being passionate about interests that are not generally popular, and perhaps also to being somewhat socially inept. Used in a derogatory way. Just ask one of those geeks if you can borrow their notes. Did some geek really try to ask you to the dance? Ugh. I thought this was supposed to be a party—it's just geeks playing Dungeons and Dragons!

2. Someone unabashedly passionate about a very specific interest or interests. Used as a term of endearment or pride. Finally, a convention for me and my fellow geeks. I'm a chess geek, so I've watched every chess documentary I can kind. A: "I had no idea you played video games." B: "Yeah, I'm something of a video game geek. I've even cosplayed as Tifa before."

geek out

slang To express excitement and enthusiasm about one's very specific and sometimes unpopular interest, especially by talking about it in great detail. My dad is a musician, so he totally geeked out during our trip to the Martin Guitar Factory. I completely geeked out when I realized I was looking at a sandhill crane—they're just so rare in this region! A: "Can I just geek out for a minute about how gorgeous Nicky Hopkins's piano playing is on this song?" B: "I don't know who that is, but sure?"

geek-chic

Describing an aesthetic that incorporates the clothing and accessories typically associated with studious or intellectual people (hence "geek") in a consciously fashionable way (hence "chic"). Often includes such items as glasses, blazers, cardigans, and knee-socks. I love your new tortoiseshell glasses and this whole geek-chic thing you've got going on. That cardigan with the elbow-patches? Very geek-chic. A: "I was in my 'geek-chic' phase then—Peter Pan collars, plaid skirts, knee-socks." B: "Well, you were working in a library. It kind of fit the whole vibe."

1. n. a disgusting and repellent person; a creep. (Rude and derogatory.) The convention was a seething morass of pushy sales geeks and glad-handers.

2. n. an earnest student; a hardworking student. (Usually objectionable.) It looks like the geeks are taking over this campus. How gross!

3. n. a person, soldier, or civilian of an East Asian country, especially in wartime. (Rude and derogatory.) Willy is tired of geeks and the way they talk.

geek out

in. to study hard. (see also geek.) Big test tomorrow. I’ve got to get home and geek out.

mod. stylish or fashionable only for social outcasts. (see also geek.) Why do you have to buy all this geek-chic stuff? Don’t they give it away somewhere?
