be estranged from (someone)

To no longer have a relationship with someone, often because of hostilities or disagreement. Dave has been estranged from his children ever since his divorce from their mother. What happened between Molly and her mother? How long have they been estranged from each other? I was estranged from my family for a few years, but they've since welcomed me back with open arms.

become estranged from (someone)

To have one's relationship with someone deteriorate or dissipate, often because of hostilities or disagreement. Dave became estranged from his children after getting divorced from their mother. A: "What happened between Molly and her family?" B: "She became estranged from them after she converted to a different religion." When did Bill become estranged from his father? What brought that about?

to be alienated from someone. (*Typically: be ~; become ~.) Toward the end, they were estranged from each other, so a separation was perfectly natural. She had been estranged from her husband for a number of years.
