To die because one is so extremely distraught from heartbreak. Used figuratively and hyperbolically. When my girlfriend dumped me, I thought I would die of a broken heart. My grandfather passed away just a week after my grandmother. I truly think he died of a broken heart. I feel so bad for my poor daughter. You really do think you're going to die of a broken heart when you're 16 and your first boyfriend dumps you.

Fig. to die of emotional distress. I was not surprised to hear of her death. They say she died of a broken heart. In the movie, the heroine appeared to die of a broken heart, but the audience knew she was poisoned.
