cred

A shortening of "credibility," referring to one's ability to be accepted or deemed legitimate in a particular situation or group. A scrawny geek like me has no cred with the jocks. You'll have cred with these guys once they find out how much you love their music—you'll fit right in! I had no cred at my new school until the kids saw the tricks I can do on a skateboard. Now, everybody wants to talk to me!

street cred

slang One's reputation, credibility, or authenticity in relation to the people and culture of an urban environment. "Cred" is short for "credibility." The new political candidate has a lot of street cred, which has really invigorated young voters in this district. I just feel like she lost some of her street cred when she started taking her music mainstream, you know?
