chuck

1. verb, informal To throw out or discard. I'm going to chuck the rest of this food. Do you want some of it? Can we please chuck all these old papers of yours? They're just taking up space. You've gotta chuck some of the kids' art projects while they're sleeping. Otherwise, your house will be overrun by that stuff before they even finish preschool!
2. verb, informal To eject or force out from some place. The bouncer chucked the man for being belligerent. You have no grounds to chuck us out of here! Hey, watch the hair! I called security to chuck the group of rowdy teens carrying on by the entrance.
3. verb, informal To put (someone) in some place or situation, especially abruptly or without warning. Usually followed by "in" or "into." The government chucked him in jail for nearly a year without so much as a warrant for his arrest. I did not "chuck him in detention for no good reason"! He wouldn't stop carrying on, despite multiple warnings! If those brats keep acting up for you, chuck 'em in time-out.
4. verb, informal To quit or give something up, often one's job. I heard Sarah chucked her job to go traveling around the world. The money has been good, but I'm just about ready to chuck the world of investment banking altogether. That new nurse lost her first patient and looks about ready to chuck her job in medicine.
5. verb, slang To vomit. Usually followed by "up." Everyone chucked their lunch after getting off the roller coaster. I spent the whole morning chucking up my breakfast. The rookie saw blood for the first time and chucked up his breakfast right there at the crime scene.
6. noun, dated slang Food. A: "How's the chuck in this joint?" B: "Eh, you get what you pay for." I'm starving! Any idea where we can get some chuck around here? If Lisa offers you any chuck, don't eat it—she's a terrible cook!
7. noun, informal Rejection or dismissal. Usually used with "the." I heard Janet gave John the chuck recently. I'm just worried that I'm going to get the chuck because of what happened in the meeting. The boss will definitely give us the chuck if we lose this big client!
8. noun, informal A good-natured term of address for a male one does not know. Often capitalized. Hey, Chuck, hold on a minute—you dropped this! ’Scuse me, chuck, just need to get by you there. Pardon me, chuck, but could you tell me how to get to City Hall?

1. A strong desire to eat; a voracious appetite. I hope you've got the chucks because I've prepared quite a feast! Our grocery bill is astronomical because we've got three teenage boys at home, and they always have the chucks. She really hasn't had the chucks since she got sick. I've practically had to force her to eat soup everyday.
2. A nickname for Chuck Taylor All-Star sneakers. "Chucks" is usually capitalized in this usage. I'm glad I wore my Chucks today since we ended up doing so much walking. A: "You're a grad student now. Do you really want to wear jeans and Chucks to class?" B: "Am I supposed to dress up or something?" High-top Chucks look cool, but they're a pain to take on and off.
