push (the) boundaries

To act in a way that challenges established norms or acceptable behavior. The most famous and influential performers tend to push the boundaries in everything from their lyrics to their clothing. A: "She's a teenager now—she's going to push the boundaries every chance she gets." B: "Yeah, well, she better get used to being grounded then!"
