be rooted to the ground

To be unable to move from the place where one is standing or situated, usually because of intense fear or shock. I was rooted to the ground for a solid minute after seeing the two cars collide across the street. The child was rooted to the ground with fear as he watched the monster scuttle closer. We only got caught because Sammy was rooted to the ground after the alarm went off!
