be on the hustings
be on the hustings
To be campaigning for a political election, with an emphasis on delivering speeches and meeting potential voters. A "hustings" was the platform on which candidates were nominated to British Parliament through the mid-19th century. If you want to be voted onto city council, you need to be on the hustings as much as possible so people have a clear idea of whom they're voting for. The candidates have been on the hustings nearly every day in the lead-up to the election. I know you've been on the hustings all spring, but it's paying off—your popularity among voters is at an all-time high!
