be (as) hard as iron

To be very hard. I didn't sleep at all last night. The mattress and pillow in the cheap motel were hard as iron. The muscles in my father's arms were as hard as iron after a lifetime of manual labor. How am I supposed to knead this dough when it's hard as iron?
