add oil
add oil
To put forth more effort. Often said as encouragement. Commonly used in Hong Kong by people who are bilingual, the phrase is a loan translation (calque) of the Cantonese phrase 加油 (Jiāyóu). We could hear the fans screaming at us to add oil as the time on the clock dwindled. Add oil, go, go! Yay! Good job! The hometown fans practically willed their team to victory by yelling for them to add oil in overtime.
