Someone or something that is superior to examples of a similar nature, as in This book is a cut above his previous one. This idiom uses cut in the sense of "a higher degree or stage." [Early 1800s]

COMMON If someone or something is a cut above or a cut above the rest, they are better than other people or things of the same type. Joan Smith's detective stories are a cut above the rest. I hate to be predictable, but just like the last 18 singles from this band, it's a cut above.
