yellow-dog Democrat

Someone with ardent Democratic political beliefs, who refuses to vote for any political candidate from the Republican party. Thought to be derived from the notion that if the only opponent to a Republican candidate were a dog, such a person would vote for the dog. Heard primarily in the Southern United States. My aunt lives in the most conservative part of Texas, but she's been a yellow-dog Democrat her whole life.
