To gain political power or sway, especially at the expense of someone else. Frankly, it seems like they're here to score political points, rather than to negotiate in good faith. Yeah, that senator is a moderate Democrat, but he's from a pretty red district, so voting against this progressive bill will help him score political points with many of his constituents.
