wreathe (someone or something) with (something)

To enclose, encircle, or surround someone or something with some substance. Often used in passive constructions. The hotel wreathed the guests with laurels when they arrived. The building was wreathed with flames by the time the firefighters arrived. The mystic burned incense and used it to wreathe the shrine with smoke.
