winkle out

1. To force, extract, or pry someone or something from a particular place or position. Primarily heard in UK. The banks have been winkling families out of their homes in record numbers following the sharp recession in the economy. The military decided to use drone bombers to winkle out any entrenched enemy factions.
2. By extension, to obtain or acquire some information from someone through coercion, scrutiny, or interrogation. Primarily heard in UK. Delilah's incredibly sharp and persistent. If anyone can winkle out the truth about this whole thing, it will be her. The police have acknowledged that they used inappropriate means to winkle a confession out of the suspect.
