To apply water or another liquid to something, especially hair, in order to make it remain lying flat. A noun or pronoun can be used between "wet" and "down." My mom made me wet my hair down for the school photographs. He wetted the decals down with a sticky substance to stop them from peeling up from the side of the car.
wet someone or something down
to put water onto someone or something. Mother wet the children down with a hose while she was washing the car. Karen wet down the children with the hose. We wet the new concrete down to help it cure in all the heat.
1. To wet the surface of something entirely: The painter wet down the canvas. We wet the car down before applying the soap.
2. To cause something to bend down or lie flat by making it wet: I wet down my hair so that it wouldn't stick up. The heavy dew wet the grass down flat.
