war against (someone or something)

1. To wage war on some other country or group of people. Under the rule of its new dictator, the country has begun warring against its neighbors in an attempt to consolidate power in the region. A severe depletion of resources led several tribes in the region to war against each other for many years.
2. To attempt to eliminate, destroy, or overpower someone, something, or some group. Many fear that the new government will soon begin warring against organized religion. As a result of its war against drugs, the country has inadvertently warred against the millions of people trapped in cycles of poverty and addiction.
