wait for the ball to drop

(redirected from waiting for the ball to drop)

wait for the ball to drop

1. To wait for the ceremonial lowering of the Times Square Ball at 11:59 PM EST on New Year's Eve. A: "It's only 9:30!" B: "Oh, I'm too tired to wait for the ball to drop—I'm going to bed. See you next year." The kids are bouncing off the walls waiting for the ball to drop. This is why we never let them stay up this late.
2. To wait for the next, seemingly unavoidable (and typically negative) thing to happen. Mom said that Dad would punish us when he got home from work, so now we're just waiting for the ball to drop.
