under the saya

under the saya

Of a man, subject to the authority of a woman, typically one's wife. The phrase has a negative connotation when used to describe a man who is thoroughly and continually dominated by a woman. Used in the Philippines, where a long skirt called a saya is commonly worn. Now that you're a married man, you're under the saya, and your wife will run your household and set the budget. If his wife doesn't like us, we won't see him anytime soon—he's under the saya.
