1. Significantly more prepared, skilled, or successful than someone or something else. I went to Sarah's office to start planning the project, but she was already two steps ahead. The company is still two steps ahead of the competition in the smartphone market. I don't know why, but our kids are two steps ahead of us when it comes to understanding new technology.
2. Able to easily or deftly outmaneuver someone or something. That crook hasn't been arrested yet because he's always two steps ahead of the cops. The spy finds herself being hunted by her former agency, so she'll have to stay two steps ahead if she's going to survive.
