1. A permanent non-academic resident of a college town or city. The townies always start complaining when the academic term starts and college students start flooding back into the city. They're putting in several new apartment buildings to serve primarily as student accommodations, much to the chagrin of the townies in the area.
2. Someone who lives in a town or city, especially in contrast to someone who lives in a rural area. Primarily heard in UK, Ireland. It really irks me when the townies running the government try to tell us farmers how to live our lives. You can always spot the townies who come out to these country festivals.
