tip off about (something)

To give someone secret, private, or insider information or news about something, especially that which gives them an advantage of some kind. A noun or pronoun is used before or after "off." An anonymous source tipped off reporters about the senator's use of campaign money to fund private trips to the Bahamas. I tipped the cops off about the gang's plan to rob the bank.
