throw (something) out of gear

1. To shift the transmission of a machine into neutral. It's no good, the engine won't start. Throw the truck out of gear, and I'll try pushing it down the road.
2. To cause some process or situation to begin no longer function or operate normally, ideally, or as desired. Unusually heavy rains have thrown things out gear for those living in the normally arid region. The economy was thrown out of gear by the sudden bankruptcy of one of the largest financial firms in the country.
