To disparage one, especially to the detriment of their reputation. I'm trying to maintain a fair and respectable campaign, and my opponent has no problem throwing mud at me!

I don't think he ever wore it in the House, but he was often seen around in it, as if daring his detractors to throw mud at him because he knew they wouldn't be able to make it stick.
