One who attends something, such as a date, in order to keep romantic feelings between two people from intensifying. A: "Ugh, I can't believe you're making me bring a fire extinguisher on my date." B: "Your sister will just be there to make sure you don't do anything unsafe with this boy."
A chaperone. This 1920s phrase referred to a chaperone, whose presence and vigilance prevented romantic sparks from bursting into flames of passion.
