the devil's (own) luck

the devil's (own) luck

Originally derived from the folkloric belief that someone must have made a pact with the devil in order to get such good fortune.
1. Extremely good fortune. I can't believe I won the lottery and a radio contest in the same week—I have the devil's own luck! A: "How on earth did you escape that accident unscathed?" B: "It must have been the devil's luck, I guess!"
2. Exceptionally good fortune despite one's evil or immoral actions. The politician has faced scandal after scandal, but her popularity hasn't wavered at all. It must be the devil's luck. The criminal seems to have the devil's own luck, because every time he's about to be caught, something happens that helps him elude the police.
