talk past one another

Of two or more people, to engage in a conversation without actually understanding or engaging with what the other person is saying; to discuss two different things while supposedly talking about the same thing. The two debaters just talked past one another for the whole evening. They never actually addressed the other person's points in any meaningful way, instead just reiterating their own rhetoric. The two mathematicians loved getting together, though they often talked past one another, as they were so focused on their own individual research.
