swingman

1. In basketball, a player who plays both the guard and forward positions and shifts between them during a game. It's much better to have swingmen than players who are only strong in a single position on the court.
2. In ice hockey, a player who can play as both a defenseman and forward, shifting between them during a game. The swingman made an incredible move to stop the other team's attack, then ferried the puck up the rink and landed a blazing short on net.
3. In baseball, a relief pitcher who is also able to be a starting pitcher if needed. Their swingman has been starting for them more and more as their usual starter tries to recover from his shoulder injury.
