To cause someone to remain in a state of uncertainty or expectation, usually to achieve some end. A noun or pronoun can be used between "string" and "on." I've been trying to get my cable company to fix the problem with my account, but it feels like they're just stringing me on. You really shouldn't string girls on like that, Dan. You're going to end up breaking their hearts.
