BRITISHCOMMON If someone strikes lucky or strikes it lucky, they suddenly have some good luck. I arrived at 12.30 to give myself time to find a parking meter, but struck lucky immediately. The lottery mainly takes money from the poorest people, who dream of striking it lucky. Note: This expression has its origins in mining in the 19th century. It refers to someone finding the minerals or oil that they were looking for. `Strike oil' is based on the same idea.
