stew in (one's) own grease

To brood over one's unpleasant emotions, especially guilt, anger, or anxiety, in isolation. A less common variant of "stew in one's own juices." Kevin was in such a foul mood at dinner that I left early and just let him stew in his own grease. I can tell the suspect is racked with guilt. Leave her to stew in her own grease for a while, and she'll confess.
