To have an unfortunate, unpleasant, or inauspicious start. Usually said of some initial meeting or interaction. I know I stepped off on the wrong foot when I was a half hour late to the interview, but I promise that I will always be on time once I start working here. The candidate's election campaign has certainly stepped off on the wrong foot following his disastrous performance at the debate.
