To remain in some location in order to have a meal (with someone). A: "Would you like to stay to dinner, Jeff?" B: "Sure! I'll have to ask my parents first, though." A: "Thank you for letting me sleep here last night. I'd better get going." B: "Won't you stay for breakfast before leaving?"

to remain in a place for something, such as dinner. I hope you will stay to dinner. I stayed to lunch because they were having fried shrimp.
